Frequently Asked Questions

 Personal Styling

What is Personal Styling?

Personal styling is when I work with my clients in their homes. My clients share their closets, clothes, and try on outfits with me in person. Personal styling also includes digital (or virtual) styling. Digital styling is when I work with my clients via the internet using Skype™ or webmeeting.

Do you work with men?

Yes, I work with men and women. Check out my Just for Men page.

Do you work with recent graduates or professionals just entering the workforce?

Yes, I work with teens, recent or soon to be grads and young professionals. Check out my young adult style page.

How does personal styling work?

When we work together in person (not virtually), the session will last approximately 2 to 3 hours depending on how many clothes you have and what looks I am putting together for you. This time spent in your closet is to “restyle” what you own to create new looks and outfits (shopping your closet). I will be documenting outfits as you try them on for your lookbook. After the session, I will prepare the lookbook and shopping list.

What to expect?

There will be a lot of time spent trying on clothes, shoes, and accessories. I will not go through every article of clothing you own. I will assess your closet to put together representative outfits that reflect the style you want to portray. I will probably give you some “homework” for remaining items so you can go through them and finish putting together looks or finish evaluating items after seeing what I do. I do not (and I repeat do not) make you get rid of everything you own and have you buy all new clothes. This is not TV and I call it restyling for a reason.

Can you give me a brief outline of what we’ll be doing?

When I arrive at your home, we will be ready to start right away because your style will be defined. I bring a rolling garment rack that I use to put clothes on from your closet. There will be some downtime for you while I am assessing what you have and putting outfits together. Once I have organized the clothes on the rack, you will try on the outfits and items for us to discuss and review.

Do I need to have my clothes clean?

It helps if most of your wardrobe is available and ready to be tried on. Not everything needs to be clean but have it accessible if it’s in your laundry basket.

Will I be trying on clothes in front of you?

I will have you try on a number of things. So dress comfortably but know that you will be changing. You don’t need to change in front of me- so wherever you are most comfortable, but I will need to see how the clothes look and document. I will also be laying out items without you wearing them for your lookbook.

What do I need to do to prepare?

Not much. If you have a lot of clothes to be washed, get most of them done. If you have elected to add “purging assistance,” please have those clothes available as it will help me to evaluate what you have to see if it goes with the style you want to portray. Please make your shoes are available or easily accessed in your closet. Have any accessories available that you may use – handbags, scarves, jewelry, etc. You don’t need to do much else except, have fun and have some water on hand! Everyone gets warmed up during these sessions.

What clothes do you want to see?

This depends on the areas where you need assistance, and we will establish this during the consultation after you complete a contact form. If you need help with professional attire, we will focus on those items. Likewise, if you need help with causal or weekend looks, we will want to see those clothes. If you have elected for “purging assistance,” be sure to have the items available.

How does virtual styling work?

The styling session will be broken out into two parts- the first will be for you to walk me through your closet, and I will document what I see. I may ask you to try on a few things but otherwise, it’s more for me to “catalog” what you own. You will share your closet, clothes, and try on outfits all done virtually. I will then work with the catalogued items to create a set of outfits. In our second session, you will try on what I have put together. We will discuss what works, what doesn’t, etc. I will then provide you a shopping list.

Will I get a lookbook if we work together virtually?

There is no lookbook created during virtual styling. However, you do get a reference form listing the items that go with the outfits I have created so you know what to pair together along with suggestions for accessories and other tips.

Do you have a terms of agreement or contract that we sign? How do I pay you? Do you take credit cards?

I will send you a contract and service agreement via email for you to sign before we work together. Terms of payment are outlined in the service agreement. I accept cash, check or credit card.

How do I know which service I need/How much do these services cost?

All clients start with the Discover Your Look Package. Once we have discovered your look, we determine the next steps to achieve your style goals. This can include working together in your closet to restyle what you own to create new outfits, and if you want me to shop for you, I offer personal shopping. If you want to discuss your style and which service is best for you, I offer complimentary 30-minute phone calls to discuss your style goals. Click here to schedule time to speak with me.

Personal Shopping

Personal shopping is the same type of experience you get with personal styling except …

What is personal shopping?

When a client works with me, personal shopping involves me going to a pre-selected store ahead of time and “pulling” the clothes. My client will then meet me for an appointment to try on the clothes. This is a fun experience and dramatically reduces the time my clients would spend shopping on their own, the pulls are targeted for my clients style and most of them (I can’t guarantee all) will fit. Personal shopping is a similar experience to personal styling except as noted below.

Will I get a lookbook?

Yes, you will get photos edited and added to your first lookbook so you have them to reference.

Do I need to book styling and shopping together?

No, you don’t. You can work with me initially for restyling and then complete shopping at a later date. You can book shopping as its own service as well!

Do you shop for shoes and accessories?

I will target those items if you have gaps in those areas.

Do I need to bring anything?

I will advise if you need to bring certain clothes or footwear ahead of time. Otherwise, no, you just dress comfortably, bring water, and I will take care of the rest.

How do you choose the stores?

The stores will be selected based on the service offering you choose. If you elect the option to shop at local, secondhand stores, I will select the store based on a combination of your age, size, style, and budget. If you have elected for online shopping from national sustainable brands, I will give you a detailed shopping list of items, sizes, colors and stores to order from. We will then have a follow up session via Skype™ or in person for you to try on the items and for me to document either in text or with photos.

What about virtual shopping?

I will provide you a general shopping list to fill in the gaps in your closet. An additional service includes a detailed list for items available online from national sustainable brands, I will give you a detailed shopping list of items, sizes, colors and stores to order from. We will then have a follow up session via web meeting for you to try on the items and for me to document either in text or with photos.

What do these styling terms mean?

What is a closet review/audit? What is restyling?

When you work with me, a closet review (or audit) means that I review what is in your closet to put together outfits. Restyling means I will work with what is available in your closet to create outfits to achieve your target style. Inevitably, some items will not make the cut and you can take them out of your wardrobe rotation or donate/consign them. I do not make you throw away, purge or get rid of items if you are not ready. However, if you are ready to purge items in your closet, I can help you with that. Sometimes, we just need an objective opinion to help with the decision of whether an items should stay or go.

What is personal shopping?

So I do things a bit differently because I shop either at consignment stores OR from online, sustainable brands. If you are in the Phoenix metro area, I shop for you not with you. I select the consignment store(s) to shop at and select the clothing ahead of time for you to try on. This saves you a lot of time! You purchase what you want the rest goes back on the rack. If you would like personal shopping from online sustainable brands, I create a list with the items, sizes, colors and you purchase them. Depending on the service you select, I come to your home while you try them on (and photograph you) or we will do this via Skype™.

What is a lookbook?

A lookbook is a digital “book” in pdf format with photos from your closest restyling and from the outfits you try on during shopping (if you choose that service when working with me). The lookbook will feature tips and tricks so you can create looks beyond the photos as well as ways to accessorize and elevate the look through the use of footwear and accessories.

What is a moodboard or style board?

A moodboard can mean different thing to different people. For me it is a board you create on Pinterest to show me the style you want to portray. You may already have one created which makes it easier. This board is created to reflect your style including clothes, shoes, and accessories. You are painting a picture for me to understand your ideal style. Then I make it happen for you!
